Maths
What we aim to achieve
Our maths curriculum follows the National Curriculum and focuses on three key areas:
- Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practise with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately;
- Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language;
- Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
Mastery
As a school, we follow the White Rose Scheme of learning and we are working towards a whole school Teaching for Mastery approach. This approach to teaching maths means that instead of learning mathematical procedures by rote, pupils develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. This will enable them to make connections and apply their learning in different situations.
Mastery is developed through the ‘Five Big Ideas’: Representation and Structure, Variation, Fluency, Coherence and Mathematical Thinking.
Mastering Number
From September 2025, we will be taking part in the NCETM Mastering Number programme. These daily sessions will support EYFS, Rec and KS1 to embed knowledge of number.
Numbots and Timestable Rock Stars
In addition to daily maths lessons, pupils develop automaticity through online platforms. These include Numbots for key stage 1 and Times Tables Rock Stars for year 2 upwards.
